Once you know your dog's coat type, you can determine the best grooming tools from our grooming guide.
Short and Wiry Coat
Most terriers will have this kind of coat.
Brush with a slicker brush or hard, tightly-gauged bristle brush. Coat stripping with a stripping knife is also recommended by many groomers.
Short and Smooth Coat
Breeds such as Basset Hounds, Beagles, Pugs, etc.
Going in the direction of the coat’s grain, brush with a tightly-gauged softer style bristle brush.
Medium-Long Flowing Coat
Seen in breeds such as in Retrievers, Spaniels, etc.
Brush with the coat’s grain using a wire-pin brush or a hard loosely gauged bristle brush. Use a slicker brush for stripping.
Thin and Delicate Coat
The Maltese and silky Yorkshire Terrier are good examples here.
With a pin brush, brush against and with the gain of the dog’s fur. Use the slicker to remove mats.
Medium-Long Flowing Coat
Seen in breeds such as in Retrievers, Spaniels, etc.
Brush with the coat’s grain using a wire-pin brush or a hard loosely-gauged bristle brush. Use a slicker brush for stripping.
Wavy or Curly Coat
Commonly found in breeds like the Bichon Frise, Poodle mixes, etc. This type of coat tangles and knots easily and has a tendency to become dry.
Before brushing your wavy-coated dog, you should always spray him with some sort of conditioning spray to avoid breakage.
